My path to hiking Kilimanjaro

I have always enjoyed being in nature taking in its beauty, serenity, and wildlife. Additionally, I love to exercise and challenge myself to new heights I did not think I could reach. So, naturally, I have loved hiking since I was a kid scrambling over rocks and feeling fulfilled when I reached the summit or end of the hike. Going off the trail was always the most fun part as I enjoyed increasing the adventure and challenging myself further. I have experience hiking up smaller mountains around the mid-Atlantic and Pennsylvania but never have I attempted a feat quite like climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in the African continent making it one of the seven summits. Standing at 19341 ft, Kilimanjaro, in the country of Tanzania, takes the average attempted hiker 7 days to climb and has a summit success rate of 50%. The hike itself does not require an experienced climbing background but just will and determination. The challenging part of Kilimanjaro is the altitude sickness which is very common among hikers as it is easy to climb up too quickly. The climb up Kilimanjaro seems daunting but with more experienced climbs on smaller mountains, I think I will become more comfortable attempting it.
